The outline helps in organizing the ideas and items of research that are being used in the topic of study. The outline is a brief explanation of how the research was carried out, when it was carried out, who was involved, and the results obtained. Many times this outline is written by the researcher who did the research. The outline should be written to be precise about the details and data that were collected for each section of the study. This outline is also very important to the writer. The outline represents the overall format of the research, so that the researcher does not have to do a bunch of stuff in order to properly document the research. A good outline will already contain the data that is most important for the overall presentation of the data.An outline is an important part of the documentation of any project, especially in the area of a clinical trial. This is because it will serve as a summary of the main findings. It is very important to know that the outlines are written only once. There is no need to go back and re-write them, unless there is a problem with what has been presented.Generally an outline is not necessary for every research project. The outline serves as a way to organize the data gathered, it also outlines the main topics to be covered in the project. Each section of the study should be written separately, with the schedule for the study. This is important in order to keep all of the materials on hand and ready for use in the studies. An outline is not a part of every research projects, but is usually required for those clinical trials that have only one subject and research room. Also the outline will need to be submitted to the database administrator of the database where the clinical trial is stored. It is recommended that a researcher has a good outline prepared for each study, including all sections of data collection, and all of the other aspects of the study. An outline needs to be completed before the actual research begins. This will be the first thing the investigator will see when preparing the project for each project. A well thought out outline will give the investigator an idea of how many hours have been spent on the project and what parts they have accomplished. Any follow up research can be started based on this information. The process of completing an outline of research begins with the first step in the project. The investigator will write out the questions to be asked in the project. The list will need to include the question that should be askedwhat type of research it will be and how it will be evaluated. This is to give the researcher something to use when planning their next project. The next step in the process is to gather the information needed to complete the project. This will include notes of who is involved, what exactly the scope of the project is, and what the exact outcome should be. These notes should be made at the beginning of the project and once it is completed. It is important to note that the researcher has many options for completing an outline of research.

How The Criminal Justice Profession Helps On An Individual...

Throughout this whole term we have learned numerous roles of the criminal justice profession. How on a macro level law enforcement has made points to serve and protect, all the way down to the micro level of society. Men and women risk their lives every day to make sure that the law is obeyed, and their community is still held together. In the following paper you will see how the criminal justice profession helps on an individual and societal level. But what does each level mean you may ask, well let’s break it down a little. Individual need is person to person with the law, where societal is in the community of the law enforcement. The first individual need are assaults in and around bars. The proliferation of bars in many communities†¦show more content†¦These people not knowingly could create conflict with each other. So how can this issue be fixed, there are a few ways that the criminal justice professional can do. For starters some cities have where the bouncers in bars have had some sort of law enforcement background, that way they will be able to handle any issue that may arise in a better manner than the big macho black shirt bouncer who is just for show. Also another way they can help is during closing time in the congested areas have more officers patrol the area. That way much of the conflict can be subsided. Our second individual need is how the criminal justice professional can stop people from shoplifting. How is shoplifting an individual need you may say, well for instance it someone in your community stole something from your local Walmart it would not affect the community, only affect the person who has committed the crime. How would someone spot a shoplifter, Shoplift Prevention - Los Angeles Police Department, 2016, says that these are some things to look for: seems nervous, avoids eye contact, wanders around the store without buying anything, leaves the store and returns to your business repeatedly in a short period of time, stays in an area of your business where he or she is hard to see, and keeps watching you or is constantly looking

Economic Concerns Of Deepwater Completions And Workover Essay

Economic Concerns of Deepwater Completions and Workover. Benefits: Offshore completions and workover have some environmental benefits specially during the development phase. It offers less time over the hole, needs fewer resources, requires less capital equipment to develop a field. Subsea completions also is often associated with continuing availability during the production and disposal of equipment such as platforms, manifolds etc. Risks: Introduction: The environmental risks associated with offshore completions are similar to other oil and gas well drilling operations. Extemporaneous releases of hydrocarbons to the environment can occur during drilling or completion of the well. Macondo was not the first oil spill accident in offshore platforms, and will not be the last either. Oil spill is the main reason of environmental hazard with the flow of tons of oil into the sea water degrading marine and wildlife. While oil spilling is a regular phenomenon in the offshore industry (498 blowouts worldwide during 1970-2007), it not only affects the marine ecosystem, but also increases the water depth in the drilling area. Causes: a. Spills: With the growing expansion of deepwater platforms, new potential sources of spills must be addressed. These include extended well testing procedures (which may require offloading of oil to a barge), different oil storage requirements, new types of production facilities, and new methods of oil transportation from the well site to central

Was the US Government Justified in evacuating Japanese Americans in WWII free essay sample

question: Was the United States Government justified in placing the Japanese American people into relocation facilities during the Second World War? My Answer: These shameful acts against men, women and children targeted because of their religious beliefs, ethnicity or national origin violate basic principles of human rights and justice. Misguided violence at the hands of a few dishonors the nations legitimate anger and shock over the immense loss of life and destruction from the September 11 attacks in the United States. Since Sept. 11, monitoring groups around the country have received several hundred complaints alleging crimes apparently motivated by bias and hate. (Human Rights Watch, news release, 24 Sept. 2001) Racism can be defined as a person being bias against another race. Depending on the current economic situation anyone could be considered a racist. During the First and Second World Wars, the American people were more than happy to show hatred towards the people of Germany. During the Second World War though, the American People were hit harder by an enemy that was closer to home. In the Western states, the Japanese were a very predominate race. They worked alongside of the American People. They ate with them, strolled down the street with them, American People even shopped at the places of business of the Japanese. This was greatly affected after the events of that infamous morning of Sunday, December seventh, nineteen forty one. It was a day that every American person, no matter their race, ethnicity, and even whether they had a family member or friend in the military or not, mourned the loss of 2,335 American Service Members, 68 Civilians, and 1,178 wounded service members (1997 The History Place). This created a hate towards the peoples of the Empire of Japan. This lead to the posters and propaganda with Tokyo Kid, and the Japanese People being portrayed as Monsters. If we were to fast forward to that early Tuesday morning, September 11, 2001, you can probably remember what you were doing. Personally I was Seven years old and I walked into the Library that morning and saw it on the television. I was too young to understand what was happening so when I asked the librarian what it was, she said Oh it is nothing important and shut it off. It did not register to me at the time that is was to be the deadliest attack on American Soil. 2,819 People died from that attack ( September 11 by Numbers. New York Magazine 2011). This caused the American People to to loathe the Muslims and that lead to a general dislike towards people of the Middle East. There were a total of 1,714 reported attacks on people of Middle Eastern descent ( September 11 by Numbers. New York Magazine 2011). How does this relate to the Second World War? After Pearl Harbor, The American people stopped buying from the Japanese, and anyone of Japanese descent was labeled as an enemy or a Spy. This caused the American People to fear them in society. The Government claimed that the reason that they evacuated the Japanese American People was that it was possible that they could be spies. This is very likely since they did not have the technology that we do today. Today, a background check can be done in a matter of minutes. Then, it would have taken days. There are rumors that there were Japanese Spies in Hawaii that would report to the Japanese Government on what the United States Military was doing there. They were a citizen of Hawaii and they fit right into society. This is one of the reasons the American Government was uneasy. It would have been too easy for the Japanese to have a spy in a city as San Francisco or Los Angeles. This caused President Franklin D. Roosevelt to sign Executive Order 9066 on February 19, 1942. This placed e very Japanese American and anyone of interest into a concentration camp. I am taking this second part of the qquestion as a What is your opinion on this situation? I completely agree with it. Although I rather be free than safe I think that in order to protect the majority you must get rid of the threat. It is like taking a precaution in case their would be a problem, like Y2K. Not knowing whether there would be mass chaos or not, everyone took the precautions in case something did happen. What is the difference when the US Government takes precautions? The Empire of Japan suddenly and deliberately attacked the Naval, Army, and Air Forces of the United States. Nat Turner, The Oklahoma City Bombing, the World Trade Center Bombing, and the World Trade Center Attack of 2001 are all examples of were the American Government took certain measures to ensure the safety of the American People. Airport, Subway, and Train security has multiplied tremendously since those occasions. These are the limited situations where the Government should step in. If the American Government had not stepped in and put some safety measures in then the Terrorists would feel as though they can come over and kill the American People whenever. The Government however should only require the agencies of said occasions to fix the problem. These should only go as far as to make the American People feel safenot uncomfortable. By placing the American People in more and more safe measures then they will become more reluctant to use the resources that are vital to the function of the United States. If we take drastic measures to prevent disasters solely because of what terrorist have done alreadythey win.

A female with chronic diarrhoea and loss of weight Essays - Medicine

A female with chronic diarrhoea and loss of weight Essays - Medicine A female with chronic diarrhoea and loss of weight : Analysis of a case : A 25-year- old female, Valli, from Chennai, India , visited the medical outpatient department for complaints of diarrhoea and flatulence off and on for the past 5 years , more so since 3 months . She said that she had lost a considerable amount of weight and always felt weak and exhausted. She also admitted having low backache since 3 months. She said her faeces were bulky, greasy and foul smelling. Throughout childhood, she had persistent diarrhoea but the symptoms subsided in adolescence. She was referred to a gastroenterologist. The consultant arranged for blood and faecal analyses. The faecal tests showed that she had steatorrhoea and the blood examination revealed a dimorphic anaemia with a low serum calcium. Her serum electrolytes and prothrombin time were within normal limits. The consultant suspected coeliac disease and arranged for an endoscopy. An endoscopic biopsy of the mucosa taken showed flattening of the villi with excess of plasma cells in the submucosa. What is coeliac disease? It is an abnormal reaction to gluten, a constituent of wheat flour, leading on to diarrhea and malabsorption. It is also called gluten-sensitive enteropathy, with the onset of symptoms occurring at ages ranging from the first year of life through the eighth decade What is the basic defect in this condition? The basic defect is enterocyte damage causing atrophy of the villi and malabsorption caused by Gluten, a constituent of wheat flour. The damage is due to an abnormal immune response to gliadins ,especially -gliadin, components of gluten. What is its aetiology? It is genetic, immunologic and environmental. It is a T-cell mediated disease. Antibodies to the enzyme transglutaminase released in tissues during inflammation are present in 98 %.Deamidation of gliadin by transglutaminase generates a recognition site for CD4 T lymphocytes; the locally activated lymphocytes trigger production of cytokines which then cause the damage. Gliadin peptides interact with gliadin-specific T cells that mediate tissue injury and induce the release of one or more cytokines (e.g., IFN-) that cause tissue injury. Transglutaminase antibodies also affect the differentiation of epithelial cells, by interfering with the action of the enzyme. What is the HLA associated with celiac disease? All patients express the HLA-DQ2 or HLA-DQ8 allele, though only a minority of people expressing DQ2/DQ8 have celiac disease. Absence of DQ2/DQ8 excludes the diagnosis of celiac disease What are the clinical features? The symptoms of celiac disease may appear with the introduction of cereals in an infant's diet, although spontaneous remissions often occur during the second decade of life that may be either permanent or followed by the reappearance of symptoms over several years. Alternatively, the symptoms of celiac disease may first become evident at almost any age throughout adulthood. In many patients, frequent spontaneous remissions and exacerbations occur. The symptoms range from significant malabsorption of multiple nutrients, with diarrhea, steatorrhea, weight loss, and the consequences of nutrient depletion (i.e., anemia and metabolic bone disease), to the absence of any gastrointestinal symptoms but with evidence of the depletion of a single nutrient (e.g., iron or folate deficiency, osteomalacia, edema from protein loss). Some have manifestations that are not obviously related to intestinal malabsorption, e.g., anemia, osteopenia, infertility, neurologic symptoms ("atypical celiac disease"); while an even larger group are essentially asymptomatic though with abnormal small intestinal histopathology and serologies and are referred to as "silent' celiac disease. What are the likely causes of diarrhoea in coeliac disease? High concentrations of unabsorbed nutrients in the chime would lead to osmotic diarrhea. However the delivery of large amounts of fat into the colon can result in the production of hydroxylated fatty acidsby colonic bacteria. These act as cathartics. Diarrhea may be secondary to (1) steatorrhea, which is primarily a result of the changes in jejunal mucosal function; (2) secondary lactase deficiency, a consequence of changes in jejunal brush border enzymatic function; (3) bile acid malabsorption resulting in bile acid-induced fluid secretion in the colon, in cases with more extensive disease involving the ileum; and (4) endogenous fluid secretion resulting from crypt hyperplasia. How do you arrive at a diagnosis? A small-intestinal biopsy is required to establish a diagnosis of celiac disease. The classical changes seen on duodenal/jejunal biopsy are restricted to the mucosa and include (1) an increase in the

Communication, Ethics, and Society - Assignment Example Despite the disparities in cultures, Carola slowly adjusts to the new culture; they start a business, and have a child. Her husband becomes jealous of her, especially in the event of her flirting with other men. The movie ends with Carola travelling back to Switzerland with her daughter after several arguments with Lemalian. Lemalian doubts that she would return to him. In as much as I can clearly recall the movie, I am not able to recall all the names of the characters in the movie, for instance, the serviceman at Lemalian’s and Carola’s shop, the priest in the church amongst others. Basing my argument on DeFleur’s argument, the movie is well portrayed, thus, making it less tasking for me to recall the major characters and the plot of the movie (78). Social Response to Technology Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 750 words

Social Response to Technology - Essay Example In looking at these innovations and improvements it is necessary to see what the reactions and changes have occurred within society as a result. The social response to technology in the modern world Society represents people living in proximity to one another and our interactions that result from this. Just a short time ago in the United States society was based in the mutual understanding and assistance of one neighbor to another. In the modern world we text each other when separated by a room, and as neighbors we must know each other on a social networking site before being able to get together in person. Online Dating Magazine estimates that more than 120,000 marriages every year occur as a result of online dating. (Fernandez, 2009) Society as we know it today revolves around cell phones and I-Pads making our current generation one of the most technological of all. Technology of course is not all about communication, though this is a large part of it. Technological advances over t he past 100 years have made it possible to travel into space, fly around the world without stopping, drive from coast to coast and know where we are at all times. As a result of these innovations we are able to use indoor toilets and showers that use much less water than before. As a society we are able to do more in less time and travel more as well. This new approach to life is called the leisure class; while the leisure class has always had adherents it is far more prevalent with the added technological approaches and in our current modern society. Some have defined leisure class as those rich enough to not have to work. In our modern world there is far more access to greater wealth than ever before. As a result of technological advances that have helped enact a global economic system wealth is no longer based on one’s class or background so much as their ability to gather it. According to one research the modern leisure class is not always as relaxed as the leisure class in the past. In fact many times the modern leisure class is far more interested in how they appear to others as a result of the availability of venues where one can mingle in society without necessarily interacting on a regular basis. (Veblen, 2003 p.64) One of the largest changes in society is the applications of technological advances to law enforcement. With the advent of facial recognition software and easily deployed and maintained cameras that work in the dark or light as well as the ability to endlessly stream the footage the possibilities of security beyond what we knew before are available. One of the unfortunate side effects of this on society however, is the reduction in personal liberties. The argument can be made however that society embraces these changes simply because we do it to ourselves through social networks and the use of other technologies. A new system being deployed is the Incident Command System directly applied to Facebook, twitter and other social media s ites. In one study commissioned by the Red Cross, â€Å"74 percent expected help to come less than an hour after their tweet or Facebook post.† (Miller, 2011) In conclusion we can see that for every advance there is the possibility of social problems, we can also see that society itself promotes the use of these various tools within itself. Society may have some problems adjusting however; many of these advancements have been and will continue to be beneficial. While physical contact seems to have been reduced used properly technology can increase

Interior lighting Essay Example for Free

Interior lighting Essay Interior lighting not only illuminates dark rooms, creating mood and atmosphere, it emphasizes areas of importance and highlights prized possessions. But selecting the best interior lighting for both practical illumination and as a powerful decorating tool isn’t automatic. You need to develop a lighting plan for each room that serves your lifestyle and complements your personal decorating style (Young). Luminance and Chrominance It is easier to take advantage of these effects when the interior is described in terms of luminance and chrominance. Luminance is closely related to the perception of brightness, whereas chrominance is related to the perception of color hue and saturation. By definition, luminance is proportional to the light energy emitted per unit projected area of source, but the energy in each band of wavelengths of the input is scaled by the corresponding sensitivity of the eye in that band. Therefore, luminance is a measure of the physical energy of the light source reaching the eye, but the incident energy is weighted according to the spectral sensitivity of the eye (Tregenza and Loe). Color The color of an object or surface is determined by its reflected or transmitted light. Color is not a physical property of the things we see – it is the consequence of light waves bouncing off or passing through various objects. What is perceived as color is the result of materials reflecting or transmitting energy in particular regions of the visible spectrum. A light source that emits radiant energy comparatively balanced in all visible wavelengths appears â€Å"white† in color. Passing a narrow beam of the white light through a prism separates and spreads the individual wavelengths, allowing the eye to distinguish among them. The resulting visual phenomenon is called color spectrum. â€Å"White† light sources emit energy at all or almost all visible wavelengths, but not always in an ideal proportion. Almost all sources are deficient at some wavelengths yet still appear to be white. This deficiency influences the perception of colors; the effect is known as color rendition. It causes the graying of some colors while enhancing the vividness of others (Gordon). Daylight A principal characteristic of daylight is its variability. The color of daylight changes with the time of day, the cleanliness of the atmosphere, and the inter reflection of surrounding objects. The intensity of the sun changes with the time of the day, the time of year, and the latitude of the site. The luminance of the sky depends on whether the light is coming from an overcast sky, from a clear sky only, or from a clear sky and direct sunlight. Daylight has two components: sunlight and skylight. Sunlight is the directional beam emitted by the sun; skylight is the diffuse reflection of light from particles in the atmosphere (Gordon). Incandescent Lamps The incandescent lamp depends on passing an electric current through a wire to such an extent that it glows white hot. Tungsten wire is now used, but early lamps used carbon filaments; it is necessary to have a material with a high melting point so that it emits light for reasonable length of time without breaking. The tungsten wire is usually coiled and coiled again to produce a fine filament. This is supported on two wires, which connect it to the electricity supply. The bulb usually contains an inert gas to stop the filament oxidizing; sometimes a vacuum is used. But gradually, as the lamp operates, tungsten evaporates from the filament and is deposited on the inside of the bulb. The filament becomes thinner and eventually breaks. An inert gas filling retards this process and ensures a reasonable lamp life, typically about 1000 hours. The actual life varies within a batch of lamps, and although a mean value can be quoted this may not be helpful. Lamp manufacturers often give the life as the point when they expect a particular percentage of lamps to have failed (Tregenza and Loe). Discharge Lamps – The Glowing Gas Light can be produced by an electric discharge in a gas-filled transparent tube. The discharge is started by applying a high voltage across electrodes at each end. This ionizes the gas filling, enabling an increasing current to flow, and resulting in further ionization. The radiation produced depends in the materials in the tube ad the as pressure. Its spectrum is discontinuous, and comprises bands of radiation at specific wavelengths. Phosphor coatings in the inside wall of the tube may be used to absorb some of the radiation and re-emit it at different wavelengths – especially to convert ultraviolet radiation to energy in the visible range. With all discharge lamps additional equipment is required in the electrical circuit. This produces an initial high voltage to start the discharge, then limits the current during operation and controls the power factor. The power factor depends on the relationship between voltage and current in an ac circuit and affects the efficiency of the equipment. The combined efficacy of the lamp and its control circuit determine the energy efficiency (Tregenza and Loe). The fluorescent lamp is the most versatile package of light available in today’s market. Ranging in light output from 115 lumens to 16,500 lumens in standard sizes, they are available in 40 different wattages and numerous circuit types. Fluorescent lamps are known as gaseous discharge lamps; they produce light by discharging an electric arc through a tube filled with low-pressure gas which contains mercury atoms. Some of the electrons in the arc collide with electrons in the mercury atoms. When collisions occur the mercury electrons are knocked out of orbit and, because they have absorbed energy as a result of the collision, jump to a higher energy level. They return to their normal orbit almost immediately and, in the process, give up the energy which was absorbed (Lindsey).

Rwanda Report :: essays research papers

Rwanda Report Rwanda is an African country in East Central Africa. Rwanda is just a very little degrees below the Equator which is not too shabby in my mind. Below the Equator would be in the south and so it is actually in south central. Get it South Central (get it)HA!HA! In Rwanda there are about seven hundred and ten per square which in my mind a whole lot of people I don't think even San Bernardino has that many but what do I know. Rwanda is twenty six thousand three hundred and eighty eight miles squared which in my mind is tiny but I'll say again what do I knows. So to figure out what the exact population of this measly little country you must multiply seven hundred and ten by twenty six thousand three hundred and eighty eight and you get a whole lot but when I looked in the book it said seven million two hundred twenty two thousand people. This enormous number doesn't look right but I am too lazy too get up and get a calculator too check so I'll take their word of it. The capital city in Rwanda is Kigali which is also the biggest city in Rwanda I can't find how big it is but it must be bigger than twenty miles square and under twenty six thousand three hundred and thirty eight square miles. The official name of Rwanda is called The Republic Of Rwanda. Rwanda is also landlocked which doesn't help much either. Since it is landlocked I will tell you which countries it is surrounded by on the north it is by Ughanda, on the east by Tanzanian the south by Burundi and finally on the west it is next to Zaire. Rwanda is one of the poorest countries in the world and it is one of the most densely populated country in the world. One of the reasons for Rwanda being in such a bad state of poverty is that there was a Civil war between the Hutu and the Tutsi which fought for stupid reasons. Well at least I think that they are stupid reasons but to them it was probably some serious stuff that they don't take very lightly. The Hutu are very short people that make up about ninety two percent of the population. The Hutu are not pygmies but they are very short people that are about three feet tall a piece which is about two feet shorter than I am and now that is pretty short in my mind.

Importance of Employee Retention During a Recession

Importance of Employee Retention During a Recession Introduction During a recession companies have to constantly protect and plan for financial attacks from increased expenses, decreased sales as well as customer and especially employee retention. Management must realize that their employees are suffering just as their businesses are with increased expenses and costs for everyday items. All parties must work cohesively to transition through a down economy. Employers must be aware that their employees will be looking for other employment if the company is not providing the tools time and training in order for them to perform their jobs well. This is especially important during recessionary times when the focus needs to be on customer and employee retention. Numerous studies have found and experts agree that â€Å"company culture† is the leading factor in employee satisfaction and retention. Companies must embrace the importance of employee retention through the implementation of various retention practices so that they will be better prepared to continue to grow and be successful even through recessionary times.Companies that grasp that concept and incorporate an environment where employees feel empowered, motivated and engaged will result in greater productivity and teamwork and therefore greater customer loyalty. Company Culture Company culture and in several instances lack of a positive company culture appears to be the leading factor in the retention ratio of employees remaining versus voluntarily leaving a company. The culture of a company is defined by many different aspects. Organizations that focus on employee retention and management programs have found some surprising indications.Employee retention has been a challenge for all companies big and small and across industry lines. Many have researched and studied the reasons why some companies have better retention rates than others similar. Many experts agree that a basic foundation of proven retent ion and management skills being implemented and used effectively will result in a higher retention rate. The consensus of decades of research has found that â€Å"high retention has little to do with formal programs and everything to do with culture† (Duggan, 2010).Companies that aim to make sure theirs is a company that values its most valuable asset, its employees. Years of analysis on employee retention and human resource directives have shown that an environment where employees are valued assets and treated as such as well as one where talent has been developed with the proper tools, time and training show higher retention levels over time in any economic environment. â€Å"Among those who strongly agreed that they work for a manager who cares about their well-being, 94 percent said they intend to stay with their current employer.Of those who strongly disagreed that their manager cared about their well-being, just 43 percent planned to stick around† (Ryan, 2010). A well known gem known among informed and effective management is that employees do not leave companies they leave bad managers. With this knowledge companies should be able to make sure their focus and goal should be to ensure that their company and its management is effective, dependable and respected leaders. This focus in the long run will ensure there is a positive company culture that will allow them to maintain their most valued asset.Importance of Solid Human Resource Practices The human resource department should take the lead when implementing policies, disciplining employees and layoffs or terminations within a company and especially during a down economy. The human resource department can ensure that policies are implemented smoothly and within legal guidelines. They are there to ensure that company policies and procedures are communicated effectively. â€Å"HR must take the lead in workforce management, including, when necessary, conducting layoffs or terminations of em ployees in a systematic, ogical and effective manner â€Å"(Lieber, Spring 2009). Companies are finding that by developing their current pool of employees they will be better able to weather any market trends whether up or down. Employers should focus on making sure that employees receive regular feedback from their managers. Informal weekly meetings are a great start to fostering positive relationships between managers and their staff. Studies have found that consistent communication helps to ensure that employees are comfortable with positive and not so positive criticism.Communications and how effective companies are at communicating new policies and procedures help to foster a level of trust and openness within the entire company. An environment where employees are encouraged to voice their concerns and receive proper feedback ensures that employees are engaged in their positions and in the success of the company. Any positive, proactive measure implemented by human resources, as long as done with honesty, will help to engage employees and contribute to a positive company culture. Misconceptions of Employee RetentionEmployee retention is one of the most important factors in any companies’ success. Along with its importance come several misconceptions as well as adverse effects as a result of them. The majority of employers believe that employees would never consider leaving their jobs during a recession. In fact, a survey conducted by Salary. com showed that 65% of employees admit to passively or actively looking for a new job already (Throckmorton, n. d. ). Experts are in agreement that many times companies focus on retaining their high level executives during difficult times. An article in the Mckinsey Quarterly emphasizes that companies should instead turn their focus on retaining the â€Å"key employees† (Cosack, Guthridge, Lawson, 2010). Key employees are defined as ones that are normal performers and are critical to the company’s success overall. Key employees are not necessarily the high level executives; they are normal performing employees that are critical to the overall success of the company (Cosack, Guthridge, Lawson, 2010). Collectively the departments support the entire company and share in the company’s success.Employers tend to believe that employees are also less engaged in their positions during a down economy because they believe that employees have fewer employment options. This is another misconception. In a study conducted by the Center for Creative Leadership and Booz Allen Hamilton found that employees are more engaged in their positions during a recession. Conclusion As one can conclude maintaining a high and effective retention rate is a challenge for most companies no matter the condition of the economy.Companies that are serious about their success will always value their most important asset, their employees. Successful companies will have embraced the challenges and will enga ge their employees. Companies with effective and ethical leaders will be laying the foundation for long-term success of the company in a any economic environment.References Duggan,  M. (2010,  August). Profile of Christine Falling

Christine Falling was a 17-year-old babysitter when she murdered five babies and an elderly man. She was one of the youngest female serial killers in U.S. history. Childhood Years Christine Falling was born on March 12, 1963, in Perry, Florida to Ann, age 16 and Thomas Slaughter, age 65. Christine was Anns second child. Her sister Carol was born a year and a half earlier. From the beginning, life for Christine was challenging. Her mother Ann would often leave for months at a time. When Ann would return home, it seemed to her young daughters that she always came back pregnant. Over the following two years, after Christine was born, Ann had two more children, boys Michael and Earl. Of all the children, Thomas claimed only Earl as his biological child. The Slaughters were very poor, as were many living in Perry at the time. During Anns absence, Thomas cared for the children by bringing them out to the woods where he worked. But when he was in a work-related accident, Ann was forced to rejoin the family. After that the children were often shuffled around to family members until, according to Carol, Ann completely abandoned them, leaving them on a bench at a Perry shopping center. Jesse and Dolly Falling Dolly Falling wanted to be a mother  but was unable to have children. Her husband Jesse was related to the Slaughter children and they decided to adopt Carol and Christine. Life for the two girls at the Fallings home was unstable. Christine was epileptic and suffered from seizures. She also had severe learning and developmental problems. Physically she was unattractive, obese, and had an odd vacant look in her eyes. At an early age, Christine demonstrated personality traits that were worrisome. She would have severe fits of anger and displayed antisocial behavior. For example, she developed a fascination with torturing cats. She would strangle them and then drop them from up high to see if they really had nine lives. She learned immediately that they did not, yet that did not end her experiments. Both Carol and Christine became rebellious and unruly as they got older. However, according to author Madeline Blais in her book The Heart Is an Instrument, the girls were also subjected to physical and sexual abuse by Jesse Falling, something the Fallings both denied. However, life at the Falling home was so dysfunctional that the church pastor interceded and the Fallings agreed to send the girls away. A Refuge The girls were sent to the Great Oaks Village in Orlando. This was a group foster home designed to help neglected and abused children. Christine later commented on how much she enjoyed her time there, although according to social workers, during her stay she was a thief, compulsive liar, and would often get in trouble just for the attention that it brought. It was also noted in the social workers records that Jesse Falling had been arrested twice for sexually abusing Carol. The first arrest ended in a hung jury and the second time Dolly Falling dropped the charges. After a year at the refuge, the girls were returned to the Fallings. This time there was no sexual abuse, but the physical abuse continued. The final episode happened in October 1975 when Jesse allegedly subjected Christine to a severe beating for being 10 minutes late. He also insisted that she wear shorts to school the following day so everyone could see the justice marks. The following day the girls ran away. Munchausen Syndrome After six weeks of living with Carols friend, Christine decided to go to Blountstown and live with Ann, her birth mother. She managed to do that for a while, and in September 1977, at the age of 14, she married a man (reportedly her stepbrother) who was in his twenties. The marriage was riddled with arguments and violence and it ended after just six weeks. After her marriage failed, Christine developed a compulsion for going to the hospital emergency room. Each time she would complain of different ailments that doctors could not diagnose. One time she went complaining of bleeding, which turned out to be her regular menstrual period. Another time she thought a snake bit her. Within two years, she went to the hospital over 50 times. It seemed that Christines need for attention, which the counselors at Great Oaks Village had noted, was transferred to getting attention at the hospital. At that point, she was possibly developing Munchausen syndrome, an infliction in which those affected seek the comfort from medical personnel for exaggerated or self-inflicted symptoms of illnesses. Munchausen syndrome is closely related to Munchausen syndrome by proxy (MSbP/MSP), when they abuse another person, usually a child, to get attention or sympathy for themselves. Christine Finds Her Calling Christine Falling had few options when it came to earning a living. She was uneducated and her maturity level was that of a young child. She managed to make some money by babysitting for neighbors and family. In fact, it seemed to be her calling. Parents trusted her and she enjoyed being with the children, or so it appeared. Her Victims - The Children On February 25, 1980, Christine was babysitting two-year-old Cassidy Muffin Johnson, when according to Falling, the child became ill and fell out of her crib. She was diagnosed with encephalitis (inflammation of the brain) and died three days later. According to the autopsy, her death was due to blunt trauma to the skull. One of the doctors did not agree with the childs diagnosis and found Fallings tear-stained story questionable. He noted his suspicions that the baby was physically harmed and did not die of natural causes. He suggested that the police should talk to Falling, but investigators took no further action. Soon after the incident, Falling moved to Lakeland, Florida. The next two children to die were cousins, four-year-old Jeffrey Davis and two-year-old Joseph Spring. While caring for Jeffrey, Falling told doctors that he had stopped breathing. The autopsy report listed myocarditis, which is usually a result of a viral infection and causes inflammation of the heart. Three days later Falling was babysitting Joseph while his parents attended Jeffreys funeral. Falling said Joseph failed to wake up from his nap. He was also found with a viral infection and the case was closed. Falling decided to return to Perry  and took a position in July 1981 as a housekeeper for 77-year-old William Swindle. Swindle died on the first day that Falling worked. He was found on his kitchen floor. It was assumed that he suffered a massive heart attack. Not long after Swindles death, Fallings stepsister took her eight-month-old daughter, Jennifer Daniels, for her vaccinations. Falling went along. On the way home, the stepsister ran into the store for diapers and when she returned to the car Falling told her that Jennifer had stopped breathing. The baby was dead. On July 2, 1982, Falling was taking care of 10-week-old Travis Cook who was just home from the hospital after a week prior Christine had noticed he was having a hard time breathing. This time, however, Travis did not make it. Christine said he just suddenly died. The doctors and nurses ignored the usual tears that poured from Falling as she explained what happened. The autopsy showed that the childs death was caused by suffocation. Fallings reign of terror had finally ended. Fallings Confession Falling eventually confessed to five murders. She was afraid of getting the death penalty and agreed to a plea deal. She told detectives that she killed her victims by smotheration and had learned how to do it by watching television. She boasted about putting her own spin on the technique by placing a blanket over the children faces. She also said that she heard voices telling her to kill the baby. In a taped confession, she described the events leading up to the smotheration of each child. According to Falling: Cassidy Johnson was smothered because she had gotten kind of rowdy or something. Jeffrey Davis made me mad or something. I was already mad that morning. I just took it out on him and just started choking him til he was dead. Joe Boy was napping when I dont know. I just got the urge and wanted to kill him. Her niece, Jennifer Daniels died because She was continually crying and crying and crying and it made me mad so I just put my hands around her neck and choked her til she shut up. Travis Coleman was sleeping when for no apparent reason she killed him. Guilty Plea On September 17, 1982, Christine Falling plead guilty to murder two children and received two concurrent life sentences. After a few years in prison, she admitted to strangling William Swindle. In 2006, Falling came up for parole and was denied. Her next parole hearing was set for September 2017.

Essay on Othello - 3188 Words

Books related to Othello Othello - The protagonist and tragic hero of the play. A Moor commanding the armies of Venice, he is a celebrated general and heroic figure whose quot;free and open naturequot; will enable Iago to twist his love for his wife Desdemona into a powerful jealousy. Desdemona - The daughter of a Venetian Senator, and Othellos bride. The most sympathetic character in the play, she is deeply in love with her husband, and her purity contrasts strongly with Iagos wickedness. Iago - Othellos ensign, and Shakespeares greatest villain. His public face of bravery and honesty conceals a Satanic delight in manipulation and destruction. Passed over for a promotion by his commander, he vows to destroy the Moor. Cassio -†¦show more content†¦Othellos defense, meanwhile, is both eloquent and honest--his nobility is never more evident than in these early speeches, which serve to balance Iagos earlier descriptions of the Othello/Desdemona marriage in crudely sexual terms. Othellos account of the courtship and his wifes confirmation testify to the authenticity of their romance--which is an important theme of the play. The tragedy succeeds so well only because the audience is never allowed to doubt that Othello and Desdemona are truly in love with one another. In telling the story of how he was passed over for promotion to lieutenant, Iago says that three influential men apparoached Othello on Iagos behalf, quot; But he, as loving his own pride and purposes, / Evades them, with a bombast circumstance / Horribly stuffd with epithets of warquot; (1.1.12-14). quot;Bombastquot; is cotton stuffing; quot;circumstancequot; is wordy rigmarole; and quot;epithets of warquot; are military terms. On the other hand, a service distribution management is a process that delivers the services of the organization to their customers for better profitability. Procurement management focuses on how purchasing is done, how the product is received from suppliers, building relationships with vendors and managing internal operations (Christopher 2016). LUX resorts and hotel recognizes rewards and celebrate excellence of the supplier of the community, who has flourished over the last 12 months (Luxresorts.com 2017). They also associates with the Mauritiuss travel agents in order to fulfill their services of Hotel + Flights for their customers (Luxresorts.com 2017). Moreover, they also emphasizes on making their procurement strategy transparent by communicating with the suppliers in order to better understand their price structure for getting objects like interiors of the hotel, food supply for breakfast, lunch and dinner for the guests and Product and Service distribution management In the products and service distribution, there are different sectors for maintaining the quality of the organizational process. Stadtler (2015) suggested that in hospitality industry there are food banquets services, travelling servicing, holiday and side tour facility and offers like discount and free stay on some packages. LUX* Resorts Hotels has separate areas for full pallets and showcases for food orders to the guests, flight services for the international tourist and guests and other travel facilities for the tourist to provide them a tour package so that they can face no difficulty in their stay. Moreover, online service distribution in one of the recent initiatives that is taken by every organization (Wisner et al. 2014). In context of the technological advances, LUX* Resorts Hotels also adopted like online booking of the hotel by mentioning criteria like number of rooms, number of days for staying, number of people coming to stay so that estimation can be illustrated in r eal-time (Mangan et al. 2016). LUX* Resorts Hotels utilizes their capital, raw material, equipment, suppliers labour and implementation of new technology to formulates the final products like extraordinary facilities and services. This transformation is occurred by improving the strategic sourcing processes, and aligning the category management, strategic sourcing and supplier relationship management. There suppliers are majorly the travel agents that associates with their organization that provides travel facility to the guests. The transformation process shoes the development in the Information technology so that luxurious experience can be provided to the guests (Crandall et al. 2014). In the year 2012, LUX* Resorts Hotels also got Luxury Travel Supplier of the Year, TTG Travel Awards (Luxresorts.com 2017). Product and Service distribution management The input in this context is the service and the details of the services that are provided to the tourist regarding their hotel expenses and other facilities. The transformation process is used by giving all the availability of the details through their website buy using digital technology. The output is that the information can be delivered to the tourist in real-time with accurate information. Moreover, LUX* Resorts Hotels also have vendors and suppliers in Mauritius, Maldives, Reunion, China, Turkey, U.A.E Vietnam that also provides in-house products like customized towels, shampoo and soaps for every room is shipped directly to in-house property warehouses (Luxresorts.com 2017). Improvisation in the technology also helps in help reducing touches in the warehouse, as well as its picking operations that results in fast services. In food banquets services also, customer can place orders from their room and they an avail the service fast by the staffs of the hotel (Luxresorts.com 2 017). LUX* Resorts and Hotel also organizes painting events, yoga events, fitness classes, aqua therapy and wild-out outings in order to maintain quality of their hospitality services by selecting premium suppliers who can organize these vents with premium quality equipment (Luxresorts.com 2017). Literature review- Quality Management as a reflection of customer expectations Mitra (2016) depicts that quality management can be assesses by evaluating four factors- quality planning, quality assurance, quality control and quality improvement. Thus, an organization must have to work for the betterment of the company and adopt new technologies that can provide them a competitive advantage with respect to other companies. Trkman et al. (2015) on the other hand argues that an organization develops its organizational policies and procedures in order to fulfil the customer expectation. However, Raake and Egger (2014) portrays that managing authorities of an organization have to considers customer requirements for fulfilling their expectation and these requirements is comprised of- reliability of the products and services, responsiveness of the customers, quality assurance, empathy and tangibles. Stadtler (2015) defines that the values in management is based on two factors- stakeholder value and customer value. It is evident that in context of the stakeholder value, an organization has to emphasis on the demands and needs of their stakeholders that are- customers, employees, and society. Wisner et al. (2014) also depicts that the prime reason for considering their demands is that they are these stakeholders provide the opportunities to determine the future direction of a company by suggesting their concern. LUX* Resorts and Hotels also provide training to their staffs and suppliers so that they can satisfy the customer demands by serving them with quality services. Additionally, in terms of customers value, managing authorities of the company evaluates the eight types of customer values- efficiency, aesthetics, esteem, excellence, spirituality, status, play and ethics. Whereas Dhar (2015) argues that in contemporary organization, they have to focus majorly on four types of customer value- functional (instrumental) value, symbolic (expressive) value, experiential (hedonic) value and cost (sacrifice) value. Fawcett et al. (2014) also highlight the dimension of customer value for hospitality industry. He stated in his work that resorts managers focuses majorly on intrinsic dimension that is the enjoyment of an experience like providing exotic scenic beauty with resort. Beske and Seuring (2014) also depicts that the fulfillment of the intrinsic dimension ensures the attainment of the extrinsic dimension of the customer value. Extrinsic dimension of customer value is the accomplishment of the business objectives that is to provide facility that can meet up to the customer expectation. Additionally, dimension of self-oriented value should also consider by the managing authorities of the organization (Beske et al. 2014). In terms of the hospitality industry this self-oriented value can be created by providing customised facility to the guests like offering room of their choice or premium services within their budget. Travel agents also offer packages for the places a customer desire to visit from all the option a travelling agent shows to them. All these factors fulfill the customer expectation and enhance the quality of the service the organization is providing to their customers. Quality management Schonsleben (2016) explains that quality management is a people-focused management system that comprise of methods and tools along with the intention to adopt new technology aiming for continual increase in customer satisfaction. Krajewski et al. (2013) on the other hand, portrays that there are eight principles for quality management that an organization have to adhere. The first principle emphasizes on customer focus that is to cover both customer needs and customer service. Kuei and Lu (2013) furthermore stated another principle that plays a crucial role in the quality management is the people involvement. Every organization should focus on employee motivation, providing additional benefits and makes the employees responsible and accountable for their actions (Griffin 2016). Systematic approach to management is another important principle for quality management that ensures the alignment of complementary processes with the organizational procedure for better efficiency that result in other principle of continual improvement of the services and the organization (Goetsch and Davis 2014). Quality Management and Supply Chain Management Integration It is evident that customer always prefer to opt for the services that provides premium services in affordable cost. Surez-Barraza and Ablanedo-Rosas (2014) illustrates that customer prefers value for money. In addition to that, Gorny (2015) highlights that improving quality of the supply chain processes is equivalent to improved resource utilization and cost reductions and improved process efficiency. Bassi (2015) on the other hand argue that lower in cost investment in quality of the results in less customer satisfaction as the quality is depreciated. However, in recent times, from many researches it has been found that people prefers to get premium quality products and services irrespective of their prices. Oakland (2014) on the other hand depict that supply chin quality management refers to the study of integration between quality management and supply chain management. Thus, if great services can be available in greater price, customer will opt for the quality products. Thus, co nsidering principle of quality management that are management and strategic planning, personnel involvement, information accuracy, good supplier relations, leadership and continuous innovation, the procedure of supply chain can be enhanced that results in high satisfied customers (Goetsch and Davis 2014). Identification of potential quality problems One of the major problems is the risks management in the supply chain. Griffin (2016) depicted that an organization spend an average 50-80% of the total product cost on developing products for their organization. LUX* Resorts and Hotels also spend a portion of their annual revenue on their travel agents and local suppliers for interior decorative items. Risk like country of origin (for the organization to be operated in many nations) and shipment accuracy along with the internal process can be a challenge for an organization. Risk for visibility and mutual communication gap between the suppliers and the organization is another that should be taken into consideration. Schonsleben (2016) highlighted that only 30% of the companies have limitedvisibility to tier-1 partners while there are no company in the market havinglimited visibilitytotier-2andtier-3 partners. This leads to the risk of low quality management processes. Another problem that is faced by the organization is the assessment of the effective suppliers among the many that can align their working procedure with the culture and business approach of the organization (Dhar 2015). Thus, managing supplier related corrective actions and non-conformances is a key challenge for manufacturer. Recommendation for implementation of suggested improvements Selecting efficient supply chain partner- It is crucial for an organization to not only select the right supply chain partner but more importantly monitor and proactively manage quality in the supply chain in order to minimize the risk. Utilization of modern communication tools- Communication tools like e-mail, messages, document exchange and digital interface can ensure the mutual communication between the supplier and the organization. The mismatch in alignment issue can be resolved by using leveraging technology to connect and integrate suppliers into quality management processes. Broaden supplier assessments- Organization should assess the suppliers that have largest portion of the resources spend by the organization, their competencies and the strategic relationship with regard to a key product and client companies. This assessment allows the organization to find the most effective supplier for their organization. Establishing Clear Measurement Programs- An organization is liable for measuring supply chain partner performance in specific areas of their service quality, pricing for services, their contractor compliances and responsiveness. Conclusion Thus, it can be concluded that effective quality management ensures the reduction of waste and inventory along with the enhancement in the business activities for achieving the business objectives for every organization. The organization that is considered for this assignment is LUX* Resorts Hotels, whose major business is provide hospitality services, travel services along with facility like wild-out option, aqua therapy, fitness classes for guests. However, there hotels are placed at Mauritius, Maldives, Reunion, China, Turkey, U.A.E Vietnam and in order to maintain a same organizational culture, supply chain process have to be managed with quality. However, some of the problem that is identified in this assessment is the risks management in the supply chain; maintain cultures in all country of origin, shipment accuracy along with visibility and mutual communication gap. Though these risks can be overcome by implementing assessment of the effective suppliers, selecting efficient supply chain partner, utilizing modern communication tools, broaden supplier assessments and establishment of clear measurement programs. These outputs can be achieved by using ITO framework that is illustrated in this assessment for maintaining quality in the supply chain that results in fulfilling of customer expectation. Implementation of the modern technology and taking regular surveys from stakeholders for knowing competencies of the organization is accomplished through the transformation process for better output. Within 3 years of launching the console, the company became the second most valuable company in Japan (Farhoomand, 2009). This is a clear indication of the success of Nintendo’s disruptive strategy. The 1970s marked the birth of the video game industry. During this period, teenagers played video games in malls and game arcades. Later, the introduction of ho me consoles enabled people to play video games at home. The video game industry is a technology intensive industry. The development of the personal computer enabled people to play computer games instead of using proprietary consoles. However, video game consoles retained their popularity. The last decade of the 20th century saw the introduction of Sony’s Play Station (PS) console. Sony’s advertising strategy enabled the product to become a hype entertainment. It allowed the company to attract the youth. The lucrativeness of the industry prompted Microsoft to join the market through the launch of the Xbox. High-definition (HD) video technologies made it possible for the companies to improve the quality of their games. In addition, increased speed of broadband connectivity ensured the companies could offer services more efficiently. Since its onset, video game companies focused on gamers. Nintendo developed a strategy that focused non-gamers through the launch of the Wii . The Wii enabled the simulation real life games (Farhoomand, 2009). Nintendo has utilized a disruptive strategy to gain a competitive advantage over the other players in the industry. Disruptive strategy attempts to discard old business clichà ©s. It strives to remodel the landscape of the market. Companies that use a disruptive strategy usually target certain situations where the complacency of their competitors has made them overlook or underserve certain customers. Therefore, a disruptive strategy leads to radical changes in the industry. It leads to a permanent change in the industry (Yami, Castaldo Dagnino, 2010).Advertising Looking for essay on business economics? Let's see if we can help you! Technological advancements have increased the sophistication of games. This made it difficult for the gamers to understand some games. Nintendo strived to formulate a strategy that would reduce the complexity of games. In addition, it aimed to reach non-gamers as video game companies usually ignored the non-gamers. Targeting non-gamers would enable the company to increase the number of its customers significantly. This strategy led to the development of the DS. The DS was a handheld device that increased interaction with gamers. Gamers could tap or write on a touch-screen with a stylus. This reduced the complexity of games. Gamers did not have to use complicated sets of buttons. The success of the DS paved the way for the development of the Wii. The Wii had a controller that looked like a remote control panel. It had motion detectors that enabled gamers to play games by simply moving the controller. The motion detectors translated the movement of the controller to a screen. This made it possible to simulate real life games. The ease of use of the Wii was one of the major factors tha t fueled its popularity. The Wii enabled Nintendo to capture non-gamers. Users could engage in push-ups, yoga, and other exercises. This enabled the product to have a significant impact on the health industry. In fact, various therapists recommend the use of the Wii in performing various activities that improve an individual’s health (Farhoomand, 2009). Nintendo’s disruptive strategy presented company a chance to improve its revenues. Microsoft’s Xbox 360 was Wii’s major competitor. Microsoft launched the product in November 2005. This was approximately one year before the launch of the Wii. Microsoft’s head start of one year enabled the company to capture a sizeable percentage of the market. In addition, it provided the company with an opportunity to develop a huge archive of games prior to the launch of the Wii. The variety of games is one of the major factors that affects gamers’ decision to purchase a certain video game console. Therefor e, a huge archive of games improved the competitiveness of Xbox 360. Various parties believed that early entry into a market enabled Sony’s Play Station to capture the market. Therefore, Xbox 360’s early entry may have given it a competitive edge over other companies in the industry. Sony Play Station 3 (PS3) could not compete effectively with Wii since it was very expensive. In addition, it was not profitable. Sony made a loss upon the sale of each PS3 (Farhoomand, 2009). Competitors should develop a new business model alongside their existing business models to enable them to counter the challenge posed by Nintendo. This strategy will enable the competitors to counter the threat posed by Nintendo while retaining various important aspects of their existing business models.Advertising We will write a custom essay sample on Nintendo’s Disruptive Strategy specifically for you for only $16.05 $11/page Learn More The competitors should ensure that the business models are in separate entities. This would prevent the entities from competing with each. This would avoid a situation where managers of the parent company may feel that the new business model is growing rapidly at the expense of the parent company. Therefore, they may try to constrain it. Having a new business model prevents the parent company’s existing culture and practices from being an impediment to the success of the new business model. It is a fact that the current business models of Microsoft and Sony are the major barriers that inhibit the ability of the companies to compete effectively with Nintendo. The business models make it difficult to produce products at a low cost. This reduces the profit margin of the companies. In addition, it necessitates the companies to sell their products at very high prices. This reduces the competitiveness of their products. The companies should develop a new business model that focuses on the cost effectiven ess of their products. This may necessitate the development of new low-priced video game consoles. These consoles may have a lower quality than the initial consoles of the companies. This may require the companies to launch a new line of low-priced products. This would enable the companies to retain their existing customers and create a new market segment in the industry. The new products would compete with Nintendo’s Wii on price. On the other hand, the old video game consoles would compete with the Wii on quality. Therefore, this strategy will enable the companies to tackle Nintendo from two fronts. This would increase the likelihood of the companies wresting control of the industry from Nintendo. References Farhoomand, A. (2009).
